To open the 2019 Shady Grove Concert Series we present two blues harmonica greats, Clay Kirkland and Al Chesis, with the Delta Sonics.

The Delta Sonics music takes a Chicago Blues base and seasons it with Swing, Delta, N’awlins R&B and some early Rock n' Roll. Al Chesis supplies vocals & foot stomping showmanship but it's his harmonica playing that grabs you. He has been a Hohner endorser since 1992. Bob Pellegrino supplies the dazzling, slide guitar. Bob was the Colorado Blues Society’s best slide guitar player in three years in a row. John Butler on bass and Stefan Flores on drums ‘drive the bus’.

Al and the Delta Sonics have won the Best Blues Band of Denver so many times (six of the last seven years!) that Westword magazine finally put them in their Hall of Fame so other bands have a chance. When such blues greats as Bo Diddley, Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin, Pinetop Perkins, and Big Bill Morganfield have come through town, Al Chesis and the Delta Sonics have been THE Mile Hi ‘go-to’ band that is called to back them up.

The band made the semi-finals in the Memphis (International Blues Challenge) in 2012, after defeating 30 other Colorado bands. They have been featured performers in all the blues festivals in the Front Range: Blues from the Top; Greeley Blues Jam; Pearl Street Blues and Brews. The band has also played in Kansas City, St. Louis and New Orleans among other cities.

The Delta Sonics opened for BB King (twice) Robert Cray ( three times) and Jimmy Vaughn (twice) among many others. During the summer of 2017 the band was featured at the Calgary International Blues Fest with Big Bill Morganfield and Guitar Town in Copper Mountain with Bob Margolin. They also made their third appearance at the Beaver Creek BBQ and Blues Festival.

A great compliment to the traditional sound of Chesis is the progessive blues sound of Clay Kirkland. Drawing on his early classical training on the cello, he orchestrated his blues arrangement of the Third Movement of Brahms Third Symphony and performed it with the Colorado Symphony. He has performed with some of the greatest blues players of all time: Houston Stackhouse was guitarist with Sonny Boy Williamson on the seminal radio show The King Biscuit Flour Hour; Sammy Lawhorne was guitarist with Muddy Waters for many years; Sleepy John Estes literally wrote the book on the blues, beginning his recording career in 1929. Kirkland joins his hero, Jimmy Cotton, as only the second harmonica player to receive the Colorado Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award. Clay has taught at Swallow Hill Music for almost thirty years and is the first to be designated “touring faculty member”. He returns a few times a year from his early blues home of Kansas City to teach and perform.
