Scupanon is fronted by songwriter Rob Roper, and the style is quite eclectic, described as everything from orchestral to acoustic punk. The eclectic musical style is matched by Roper's literate and clever lyrics-- sometimes funny, sometimes melancholy, sometimes abstract and poetic.

Rob Roper has been writing and playing his songs since 2004, mostly on the Colorado Front Range. Roper played solo at first, and then with various backing musicians, including violinist Paul Ermisch from 2010 to 2018. In 2012 Roper released the 8-song CD, "The Other Side of Nowhere," featuring Ermisch on violin-- a good example of Scupanon's style.

In early 2014, Roper decided to give his collection of musicians a name. Sam Caston, Roper's percussionist at the time, suggested "Scupanon," a wild grape from his and Roper's home state of Mississippi. Caston later moved to Fort Collins but the name stuck.

Scupanon's current lineup is Rob Roper on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, Janet Lipson on backing vocals and percussion, and Diamond Jim on violin, mandolin and mandola. Chris Coward occasionally joins on bass and backing vocals, and the aforementioned Caston sometimes rejoins the band on hand drums.
